Slideways Sessions 261 Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’ve been having a great summer…. For me, I took a bit of time off from the show to enjoy some downtime with the family, played a few gigs, and have actually been working on new music in the studio. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that balance is key. Work life balance is so important if you want to be good to yourself and those around you. I think it’s one of the reasons I’m still sustaining this my livelihood in music. Part of that balance was having the opportunity to take my wife and son away up north to Quebec, where we went deep into the forest, to a festival called Eclipse. I’ve mentioned this festival before on the show and my feelings remain the same. What an incredible production from the top down… and it always puts perspective on why I do what I do. Music is the pulse that brings the community together. No one is more important than the other… the ones playing the music are the same as those making the food…. are the same as the ones dancing… are the same as the ones holding space for those that need it. We are ripples colliding with one another. It’s because of those perspectives on music and people… and the way we come together that I was so proud to bring Sylus up on stage with me… so he could see what daddy does… and what it feels like to pursue a dream. Honestly it was a top 3 moment for me in my music career to have him up there with me….. So, in honour of him, for today’s show.. I bring you my set from Eclipse Festival. I hope you enjoy….. Slideways 260 Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far…. For me, things are good. Spring has come here and heading quickly into summer. Life seems to be bustling around and growing. and I’m finding a new passion for things to come. A couple of weeks ago I played to a packed house at CODA nightclub and opened the night right into the peak hours… and man did it feel good to see everyone be free through music. What an incredible energy. Today, riding off the back of that energy, I thought I’d play a sort of recreation of those first two hours at the club. I just love the feeling of starting at silence and using that anticipation to build the night into a climax as people lose it on the dance floor. It’s moments like that that give me life and passion for what I do. If you were there, thank you for being a part of the night. Last week I actually had the opportunity to play my first show here in Toronto since restrictions were lifted and I couldn’t be more happy. We’ve had a pretty long run here in particular, so it felt so good to just go out and play some music in a club. This event was at CODA and actually sponsored by FACTOR, which is an organization that helps to fund and promote Canadian artists. It was my honour to be invited to play alongside Atlass and Andrew McDonnell. Anyways, it gave me a chance to try out some new tracks and finish off with a few of my own…… I thought I’d share it here with you. So let’s just get right into the music… and let’s slide…. Slideways 258 Hey what’s up everyone, how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far… for me? Things are good…. And these days I’m cautiously optimistic about the return of a world we once knew. At least here in Toronto, we’re finally getting whispers of no-mask mandates and full capacity public spaces. I’m excited because promoters are reaching out to start to book up some shows and it almost feels like I can reach out and touch the person I used to be. Not gonna lie, I’ve worked a long ass time in this industry and… and without the ability to play to people and watch them move and smile and dance…. I was dying inside. heh… if you think I’m exaggerating, go listen to the episodes I did of Passenger. The intros alone tell a very… clear story.. and by the time I got to episode 11 I needed to stop… step away, and find the light in myself again. The good news is that Slideways has always been my light… It’s been the constant that helped keep me fighting… pushing… and most importantly, being positive. I truly hope it does the same for you….. Slideways 257 Appreciating every moment… losing someone… The slip of a tongue Belief system Hey what’s up everyone, how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far…. For me, things are good. Got a lot on my mind these days tho… you know? Thinking about all the people I’ve known over the years and how they intertwine into my life. People come… people go….. that’s life. We change, we move on, we grow…. For whatever reason. I know the last 2 years have given a lot of people a lot of reasons to…. “Move on”. I think about that a lot actually…. Why relationships end.. or when you just outgrow a friendship. For me personally, I suffer greatly when I have no closure. When certain people refuse to.. or maybe don’t have the tools to work through hard things, and simply… disappear… that’s hard. Add broken industries into the mix, trauma… mental disorders, health issues, or drugs…. it’s just a recipe for emotional disaster. Lord knows I’ve seen a lot of that in my industry. It’s hard to manage relationships while struggling through these things. Like I said, people change, move on… grow.. and the circle around you is always adapting to the ones you let in. but you have those few you hold tight, no matter what. The ones you’ll never let go, despite hard times and disagreements. You Know…. You’re picturing them right now…. The ones you’d die for. The ones you absolutely can’t live without………. They’re everything. I work hard these days to let go of the torment and resentment that easily eats away at my soul…… thats been the cornerstone to finding myself again. And the most important part about that is that when you have all that energy back that you’ve been wasting…. It means you can pour it all back into yourself and the ones you love. They deserve it more than anyone else. And that’s actually the person they love too. More than that…. You never know when a moment with someone will be the last you share with them. Cherish it… treat that time like a gift and make the most of it… it’s contagious and… after all… we are ripples. Thank you for tuning in today…. Once again. I’m Tim Penner

Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions… I hope you’re all keeping safe and healthy in these very strange times. I know there are so many questions out there without any answers… and we’re all just sort of holding our breath to see what happens next. It’s times like these that you see the best and the worst in human nature. It’s interesting what fear can do to people but if you watch those reaction driven by fear, the results are rarely good at times like this. I know that the unknown is lurking all around us every day… and watching people panic on social media and how they behave can drive others to react in a sort of “it’s you or me” mentality… so it’s in times like this especially, when you see the negative impact that fear can unjustifiably cause on society, you need to reach deep within yourself and battle the fear with a sense of peace. Now that doesn’t mean you’re not a little afraid inside of this unknown cloud hanging above us, but what that means is that we help to stop perpetuating this erratic, irrational, and unpredictable behaviour of energy that’s destroying our communities. Your sense of peace can help ease the tension around you and allow people to think just a bit more clearly in a time of crisis. Be strong, my friends… this will pass. Some of us will be left with very different experiences from others all around the world… but we are all in fact impacted in one way or another, as humans. Be safe… love and look out for one another. In the mean time, let’s do our best to enjoy some music together… I’ve got a great show for you today.. in fact I’m really excited to give you a couple sneak peaks of two of the artists included in our new Slideways Compilation called Nova II. Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is the 250th episode of Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week… no… a great year so far. For me, things are great.. and I’m so full of gratitude for the opportunity to be here with you week after week... to share music with you… to share my heart with you…. to bring you into my life with the hopes that these humble melodies can help you through your day. When I started this show almost 5 years ago, I decided I wanted to do something a bit different. Yes, I wanted to share new music with you… but I also wanted to do something to reach an audience on a different level. I decided to do something that would forever change my life……. I decided to talk to you… at the beginning of each show. I wanted to do something I hadn’t heard anyone else do before… and pull down my own walls and share little pieces of me in the hopes that my words could help make things better for those that were willing to listen. Whether I was sharing some good news or a rough patch… whether I was giving advice and encouragement… or maybe something I personally struggled with…. I decided to be vulnerable. You see this music industry can break an artist.. it can scar you and leave numb calluses in places that destroy a person from the inside out. So, I made the choice to document the chapters of my life and share bits of my soul right here with you. I hoped that it would do a number of things. First and foremost, believe it or not, I did this for myself. Because by journaling the things I hoped and dreamed for here and to set them in audio stone, I would hold myself accountable.. so that when I listen back years from now, I can never lie to myself about where and why I end up where I do. Second… I wanted to break the mould of what electronic music means to people. Yes, many listen to music and they may connect it to their own emotions and feelings… but I wanted to distinctly make that connection before every mix. I personally wanted to connect with you so that you knew where these songs came from… to give them context. To give them a deeper meaning than.. just another podcast. I wanted to intentionally draw you in to a place where the sounds and melodies could touch you on a more meaningful level. Sharing myself gives this show a piece of humanity that so often gets forgotten on a daily basis. Lastly, I wanted to show people that they weren’t alone in their lives… struggling, fighting, failing, losing. Music is one of the most powerful forces on earth, and beyond… and it can reach people globally in the blink of an eye. So, to connect to you through these vibrations and pull you close, I hoped that you wouldn’t feel like you were facing these heartaches by yourself. And what can I say….. I have made some of the deepest, most powerful connections with so many of you that I may or may not have met in person yet. It’s my absolute privilege to travel the world to play for you now and to meet those of you that have been on this journey with me. Many of you have seen me rediscover love, get married, and have a child. Many of you have been there when I’ve had success.. and also lost so much. You’ve been here with me because you trust in something bigger than us. Something beyond the music. Something greater for our lives on this little planet. For those of you that have reached out to me to share your stories, thank you. I’ve broken down more times than I can count because of your trust… when you tell me your stories.. I feel you…. and I love you for that… because that love is the inspiration to push forward day after day.. week after week… year after year. I feel you with me. So…. all I have left to say… is thank you from the bottom of my heart. thank you.. for being here with me… you have no idea how much you all hold me together on this journey. Now, I only wanna mention one thing this week as friend of mine randomly mentioned something that was completely not on my radar….. he asked what I was doin for episode 250… which is.. next week. I’ve been so wrapped up in music projects and writing new material that I didn’t really think about what this episode meant. He explained… it’s basically 5 years//// fiiiive years of this show….. the more I thought of it the more I realized that’s actually pretty cool for me. So with that in mind, I wanted to hear from you about what some of your favourite things have been since you started listening to the show. Hey what’s up everyone, how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is the first episode of Slideways Sessions for a new year… and a new decade. I hope everyone had a great New Years whether you went out to celebrate with friends, or stayed at home and enjoyed a nice quiet night. For me, as I’m doing this intro, for the first time in years, I’m at home with my wife and my son, spending a well deserved, relaxing time together to slide into 2020. To say this past year has been a roller coaster would be an understatement. I’ve had many incredible highs… and I’ve battled some debilitating lows, and I’m doing my best to ride it all out in order to maintain some stability somewhere in the middle. I know I’m not alone in feeling these things and as you listen today, I’m sure you can relate to the feeling of simply maintaining yourself just long enough to get to the inevitable “next stage”…. whatever that may be. I think for me, I’ve realized that sometimes there is no control over your present situation.. try as you might, the universe sort of seems to just… have other plans. Sometimes no matter what you try, that next stage just simply seems unattainable. Through these moments there’s been one concept that keeps me sane. I mentioned it once before in an episode but I felt it was fitting to start the year with this in mind. We are ripples… creating our own waves in an endless ocean. As we impact others… so too do they impact us. Though our ripples may reach far distances and impact many… so too will their ripple affect us.. and they morph and change to the impact of others. And it’s in these moments when you try to create your own unique wave that you have to appreciate the beauty in the chaos and ever changing, never ending motion of the whole. Yes… we are ripples… but in fact, the ocean will always be the ocean. For me this is a powerful thought because it’s in these moments when you just want to make a difference, you need to also realize that we are connected by something greater than us. We’ve all been pulled together here by a very specific force… through music. We’ve found others that ripple in similar ways to us.. and so together we can be stronger….. and as we grow stronger, our unified ripples can cause waves that reach greater distances and have a great positive impact on the ocean that surrounds us. This is my mission. This is my purpose. So as we move into 2020, my goal is to make a difference in the only way I know how…. to ripple my own positive perspective into a chaotic, ever changing body of water. I hope this year and decade ahead proves to be something powerful for you and the ones around you. I hope you can make a change in yourself and to those that you touch. I hope that through this understanding, you will reach your own “next stage” that will carry you forward into the life you dream for yourself. Thank you for being a part of my journey… and I’m grateful to be a part of yours. Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far… for me… things are… really good. You could say I’ve been on a bit of roller coaster as of late both internally and externally. I’ve been…. just trying to get by day by day for different reasons we can just chalk up to… that’s life. It’s funny sometimes when these moments come into our lives… they can have such a profound impact on us both positively and negatively and it’s in the moments we choose to crumble.. or we choose to fight….. or sometimes… we just do our best to maintain control. Well, I’ve been in a bit of a maintenance period as of late.. just trying to stay level until I can see past life’s unpredictable fog. Anyways the other morning after a rough night and rough morning with my boy… out of the fog came a series of events that unfolded in the strangest way… as if a gentle breeze came to blow away the blinding mist in front of me. As I sat there with Sylus in my arms putting him down for his mid morning nap, there was a calm in the air…. and a soft arpeggiated melody came into my head…. followed by harmony, percussion… new sounds flooded my mind and within minutes, an entire song unfolded. This sort of thing has happened to me only two other times before. By the time it played out, my son was fast asleep in my arms and I scurried to get the song written. Here’s where the story becomes really powerful to me…… as I wrote the song in Ableton, I was hit powerfully with a new concept to perform and present music to an audience. In that moment I was presented with an entirely new way to bring people closer to sound in a live setting. I’ve never experienced anything quite so profound.. and I’ve spent the rest of the week taking the steps forward to change the way people listen and participate with an artist. Needless to say I haven’t felt so energized in a very long time. Since my album, to be honest…. which has been discouraging to me to not feel like I was pushing myself to my creative limits. I absolutely can’t wait to share this new experience with you all… and I’ve actually decided to debut this concept live on my 40th birthday in January here in Toronto to a very select, very intimate group of people. More info will come, but for now, I just needed to let you know that change is coming. I’ve been waiting in maintenance mode for this moment… and feel the pieces literally just dropped together. It’s time…. Anyways… I needed to get that off my chest because it’s an exciting time ahead…. but for now.. let’s get into today’s music…. and let’s slide… Thank you so much…

Hey what’s up everyone, how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far… for me things are good. And I’ve got an interesting show for you today.. because I was in a sort of darker, vibes mood… and a few songs into the mix I ended up actually digging deep into my own discography and decided to pull out some of my older, lesser known tracks… some of them many of you probably haven’t heard before. But they’ll give you an idea of some of my darker motifs from over the years and they just seemed to fit in perfectly today. I’ve been in a bit of a nostalgic mindset lately, thinking back over the past few years and remembering just how far I’ve come. Trying to find my own style and direction was a struggle for a long time… and the songs you’ll hear in todays episode will show you some of the variety of I’ve made trying to find myself. Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a good week so far. For me things are much better this week. For those of you that were wondering what happened to last week’s show… I was unfortunately in the hospital briefly.. but happy to report there were no major concerning results. I so appreciated all the loving and concerned messages I received while I was out of commission but I’m happy to say I’m feeling more myself and happy to be back in action. It’s funny tho because for a few days I was feeling these internal symptoms and trying to take Advil and Tylenol to help mask the pain. Trying to wait it out in hopes that it would just go away. Truth is I’d never really felt this type of pain before… and finally I came to grips that I simply didn’t know what was going on… and it was time for a professional to check it out. I know too many people my age that have randomly found something life threatening and just like that… poof… they’re gone. I have a lot in my life I’m grateful for and a lot of things yet unfinished… and sometimes life has a crazy way of changing in the blink of an eye whether we want it to or not. Sometimes we take something as simple as our health for granted… sometimes we don’t appreciate the little things enough and we become numb to the daily grind. Now I’m not saying I’ve had an epiphany about life or anything, but it sure puts things into perspective when stop and simplify. and enjoy the things we have, rather than what we don’t have.. or whats unfair. All we can do is live our lives day by day.. making it through as best as we can to make it better for ourselves and others we come in contact with. Our ripples carry so much further than we can see. Anyways… one thing I appreciate is being able to bring you new music week after week.. and after being out for the last one, I’ve found a few that should hopefully make up for it. Been one of those times where life gets a little hectic and foggy…. and the world seems a bit heavy…. but these things happen from time to time and one thing I always come to realize is that as hard as things get and as tired as you may feel from carrying the weight of the world, it will eventually lift, even just for a little while. One of the best things I’ve come to count on is the shoulders of some of the incredible people around me… to lean on.. to cry on.. and sometimes to fully be carried by. We are nothing without the love and support of those people we chose to have around us. It’s not easy finding the good ones… and sometimes it’s not easy to keep them close… but when you do, never let them go. And be there for them just as they will be for you.. right when you need them the most. Needless to say I’ve been in a pretty deep place.. and so.. the music this week reflects how I’m feeling inside. So, on that note, let’s slide deep into some beautiful melodies.. and let go of the weight that may be pushing you down, just for a little while….. Hey whats up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far. For me, things are good… busy as always balancing my time between music, family and general life things. It’s hard sometimes to be right where you want to be in order to get everything done that you’d like… but we keep pushing and we take the hurdles as they come. Lately I’ve felt like the ground around me is constantly moving and I’m not able to find that comfortable stability I long for. Sy is keeping us busy, travelling and getting sick takes up useful time, and my studio has been in chaos since France. I’ve had a long list of things I need to accomplish but in this shifting state, everything has been that much more difficult. But this happens from time to time to everyone. And what I found helps is to stop.. and press the reset button. So, earlier this week I decided to completely tear my studio apart and rebuild it from scratch. I spent two days cleaning and organizing and figuring out a new perspective for creativity. The result… a brand new work place to give a fresh start. Now, this doesn’t solve all the chaos… but it’s something…. it’s an anchor to lock myself in place so I can tackle my list of things to do. One by one… I’m moving forward and feeling my feet stabilize before me. Sometimes it just takes one thing to make you feel like you have control again. What’s your anchor that gives you stability? Don’t know? Once you figure out that one thing in your life you can brace yourself to, the rest will begin to fall back into place. Hey what’s up everyone how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far…… for me… I’m coming off an incredible weekend away up north with some close friends to unwind and let go. At one point a few of us managed to make our way to the beach in the middle of the night to look at the stars. We watched as the water flowed and reflected seamlessly into the millions of stars above. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of oneness with it all… and even though the ripples on the water are vastly different than the stars shining above, they are each playing an important role in what I was experiencing. The sand… the trees… the wind… my friends… they are all so different until you sit back and absorb the full extent of the moment. And the longer I sat in silence, the more I realized that each part impacts one another… like ripples on the water… wind through the branches… steps in sand… words spoken out loud. They impact you, they touch you.. and change you. And you are a part of the ebb and flow of your surroundings. Everything you touch feels the effects of your own ripple. And likewise, you are impacted by the ripples of others. You can choose to shape yourself in any way you like… therefore shaping others as you move through your day. What you do with that energy is completely up to you… and how you accept and impact others will dictate where you go and what you do with yourself. You may create waves… you may drift quietly along. Like it or not sometimes… we are all a part of this ocean together… and there is no escaping the ebb and flow of life. Sometimes we just need to sit back and appreciate the beauty of what that entails. Positive or negative, we are all in this ocean together. Anyways… I’ve been in a pretty introspective place lately since I came home from Europe….. the music I chose today tells a bit of a story of what I’m feeling these days. I hope you enjoy….. If there’s one thing that came shining through it’s that once again music connects us in amazing ways. Both nights were so much fun.. and on top of everything I got to celebrate my good friend Claire’s birthday… who was one of the most gracious hosts. She took me around to the island of Malta to see the rich history and beauty that her country has to offer…. We rode around in the back of a pretty dilapidated JEEP and went beach hopping. Honestly, it was both inspiring and eye opening. As I’ve said before on this show, it’s hard sometimes to see just how far Slideways reaches… until moments like these where I can look someone in the eye, give them a hug and really find out how much the music has spoken to them over the years. Thank you Claire for an amazing experience… and Joven, Ruby, Matthew, Amanda… Kev Ross… and also.. let’s not forget Anne Love… who I believe managed to attend all 3 of my UK shows. Hey what’s up everyone, how you doing today? My name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far…. For me.. life is good. I’m enjoying every minute here in France and honestly finding a new sense of sense and focus and a new joy of life. A little story for you to sum up how I feel here… When my good friend J and I were in Australia for my tour, our last night (after a hard weekend of travel and scrimping with our budget, and literally covered in mud from Elements festival as we entered our hotel), we ended up at a beautiful riverside outdoor restaurant in Brisbane. We were gonna get a STEAK damnit..... Me as a sort of starving artist hoping to bring home as much of my gig fees as possible for my wife and soon-to-be-son... I opted for the normal stripling steak instead of the more rare Wagyu steak that's available in Aus.. and not available easily in Canada. I knew I wouldn’t get a chance to have it again for a long time… I saved $17 to eat a gristly, so-so normal steak.. instead of the tender, juicy Wagu that, as J put nicely "melted in his mouth”…. I envied every bite as I cut around fat and nasty bits. I haven’t had a regret stick with me for so long. Not just because of the steak but because I didn’t take advantage of the incredible moment. You see it’s in moments like this that money is invisible.. and the memories you create and take with you are so much more valuable that the $17 I saved…… So tonight, in this beautiful city of Antibes after a perfect day at the beach, Trish and I Wagu'd the shit out of this moment. As they say… seize the day… and take advantage of every moment you have for yourself. Hey what’s up everyone? How you doing today? And yes.. this is Slideways Sessions… with a twist. I first want to warn you this is a lengthy intro today.. but it’s necessary and long overdue. I want to take you back to show you something and explain a general misunderstanding in today’s industry. I want to take you back to one of my personal building blocks. What you’ll be listening to today is one of my early mixes I used to do and upload to Soundcloud and Mixcloud. This is the 5th episode of my very semi-occasional show called The Machine. Believe it or not it took me 2 years to make 5 of these episodes. Now, why am I playing this old mix for you? Well.. a couple reasons. First.. it’s actually a bad ass mix. But second.. there’s an ongoing misconception about our industry and what it means to grow as an artist. I see far too often as DJs and producers get frustrated with the rate of improvement and notoriety. I see posts online about how things are so hard.. I see them complain and make excuses as to why they can’t make it. I watch them quit because they believe it’s not fair for them in particular. So I wanted to pull this mix out to help explain a few things. The machine wasn’t my first series of mixes that I posted. My first online series was actually called Em Sessions.. which I did maybe 3 shows… and I think I reached a total of 60 plays in total combining all of them. That’s right.. an average of 20 plays each. Well, I thought, this isn’t working.. I’m not getting plays…. Must have it wrong. So I stopped doing them. Then a little while later I decided.. I’m going to readjust my focus and make something with a theme.. and more of a brand and really hammer into this online show thing. That’s where The Machine came to life. I learned to make liners and proper cover art… and I started to research how I could begin reaching more people. You can see for yourself, even after 6 years, the first episode of The Machine (which is still available on mix cloud btw) has about 50 plays. Over the course of the next 2 years (and a measly 4 episodes later), I learned to lift those plays up to a whopping 303. 2 Years… 303 plays…. Discouraging.. yes… embarrassing to put myself out there and receive no feedback and support? yes… lose faith in myself, my music, and my direction….. yes. What the hell am I doing wrong? Why bother? But with each show I learned something new… I learned more about myself.. my style.. my direction. What I learned by doing The Machine taught me how to step up, stop making excuses and fight harder to make something work. By 2015, I was ready to showcase all the things I’d learned with Slideways Sessions. A show I do weekly.. no exceptions. No excuses. Discipline and focus every single week. Whether I feel like it or not. I’m still not there yet, but I’m fighting every day to try to make it happen. I started DJing almost 20 years ago and I haven’t been handed a damn thing. I struggled and failed and lost… just the same as I’ve earned and succeeded and won… But I haven’t given up because the truth is… I fucking love music that much. Without it I would be dead. Very literally. To those of you that got into this scene because you wanted to be the life of the party and thought it would be fun and easy… you’re in for a surprise. For those of you that think the industry is unfair and unbalanced against you… get over yourself. For those of you that want to quit because you haven’t made it after 2 or 5 or 10 years… welcome to the game. Did you really think it’d be easy? Nothing good in life ever is… besides… when you struggle, bleed, and nearly die for something… imagine how good the rewards are once you’ve earned it? That thought it what keeps me bleeding to be a part of strengthening this industry. Are you with me.. or are you just another poser poking holes trying to take others down with you? Next up, Trish, Sylus and I are heading away to France for a couple of months so that we can finally introduce the little guy to his grandmother. We’re so excited for them to meet.. and it also gives me a unique opportunity to play some great shows overseas. This weekend I’m gonna start things off on Friday with another Radio Silence Live performance in Manchester for UpCloseAndPersonal. And then I’ll hop on a train and head to London where I’ll be playing at Fabric for Liberation where I’ll join Gai Barone, Kristina Sky, and Steve Arnold. I’m so excited for this journey ahead as this is just the beginning of shows coming up. I can’t wait to share more dates with you as May and June are filling up nicely. I especially love this space because it’s dark.. it’s intimate… and perfect to go late into the after hours. This time I’ll be taking the decks alongside Jake Flaherty.. and this week’s guest.. and fellow JOOF artist, DOWDEN. He’s given us an incredible mix to showcase what he’s got in store for us this weekend….. I hope you’re having a great week so far… for me things are great… This weekend I’m heading to seattle to a very cool venue called The Underground.. where I’ll be playing for Elements . and then next week we get ready for the next Slideways event right here in Toronto. I’m particularly excited about this one because I get to play alongside two incredible local artists… one is a fellow JOOF artist… Dowden.. and the other is Jake Flaherty… who will be providing us with a guest mix in the second half of todays show. But for now… I’m gonna take the wheel as we head into the vortex with some crazy new music…. so let’s get right to it and let’s slide. thank you so much for tuning in today.. once again… Every once in a while you come across someone you just get a gut feeling about… someone that thinks a bit differently and they sort of stand out in a crowd. I’ve had this feeling about Jake Flaherty for a while now and I’ve watched as he’s grown both and as a DJ and as a music producer. He’s got what I like to call a golden ear… and he’s got something different to offer the music world. His attention to detail with sound is simply on another level… and I’m happy to bring him on board for next week’s Slideways event to open things up for us. It’s often hard with only an hour to take you guys too far…… but I think I found just the right tracks to go deeper and deeper into the vortex. Hey whats up everyone how you doing today, my name is Tim Penner and this is Slideways Sessions. I hope you’re having a great week so far.. for me things are good. And I gotta tell ya… I was going through my usual promo sites prepping for the show and it just seemed like absolutely nothing was standing out. I know I often say wow, the music is absolutely mind blowing….. but sometimes there come times when it seems like so many artists are just comfortable doing what they think they’re supposed to do. It’s because of this that people are moving away from calling their music “progressive”. It’s beginning to carry a weaker name because there are so many copy cats making the same old sounds. It’s why artists are calling their music things like melodic techno. I know it’s hard to step outside your comfort zone sometimes, but in an era where it’s never more possible to literally bend sound to your will, I’m finding many are content with doing what they think people want. Now don’t worry… in these moments, as a DJ, you have to learn to dig past the mediocrity. Wade through discouraging music in order to find those hidden gems. So.. that’s what I did.. and I gotta say, this episode runs deep within progressive while pushing the limits on what’s possible with bold new sounds. If you’re an up and coming music producer, take note… these songs carry a flavour that not only stands out in the crowd.. but pushed past it into the future. Don’t be afraid to be bold. Never shy away from doing something different. Don’t worry about what others will say… just do you…. the raw, pure, experimental you.
